Saving Thunder The Great
The true story of a gerbil's rescue from the Fort McMurray wildfire.
By Leanne Shirtliffe. Illustrated by Georgia Graham.
As a wildfire swept into Fort McMurray in May 2016, thousands were forced to flee their homes to reach safety. Among them was Julie Beth Lodge, an oilfield worker whose son, Jackson, was visiting family in Newfoundland. Her thoughts turned to saving Jackson's pet, a gerbil named Thunder the Great.
In a frightening escape, Mamma faced wildfire, traffic gridlock, an empty gas tank, and other challenges. Her only goal; to get Thunder and herself to safety for the sake of Jackson.
