The traditional pattern of living for most Newfoundlanders was to have two houses during the year - a summer tilt near the coast where the fishing operations were based, and a Winterhouse further inland where there was plenty of firewood for winter and protection from the harsh storms. It was in the Winterhouses that most of the year's craftwork was done - women would do their knitting, mat-hooking, dufflework, and many other traditional crafts.

This item has been handcrafted for Winterhouses and for you in the home of a Newfoundland craftsperson.  There is a warmth in handcrafted goods that brings us back to earlier times. The personal touch is as much a part of this craft now, as it was when hand-made years ago in the Newfoundland Winterhouses.
